The first Audi A1 on-road video shows the new compact driven by Markus Winkelhock (official Audi DTM driver), in a more modest standard version than those we’ve seen so far, although we do get a look at the famous “wasabi green” interior inserts and trim. With commentary from Horst Glaser of Audi’s chassis department, this is the first real sense I’ve got that the A1 could be a serious contender to the Mini, without the retro style, of course.

The A1 debut at the 2010 Geneva motor show was almost overshadowed by the A1 E-Tron prototype; the third in the E-Tron family, none of them are headed for production in the near future, although the second compact E-Tron is said to be the future Audi R4 [...]

Question: Has Audi overdone it with the abstract videos of its forthcoming A1 supermini? In our humble opinion, yes. While informative, we think the Germans would have accomplished more if they accompanied these videos with a series of juicy teaser sketches / images and videos of camouflaged prototypes - just like Mercedes did with the SLS AMG.

In anticipation of the next video of the 2011 A1 mini concerning a test drive with Bayern Munich's soccer stars that is scheduled for release at the end of this week, we bring you this far less interesting film with Jana Bonkova, a color and trim designer at the German firm.

Bonkova puts us to sleep informs us about a distinctive Wasabi Green accent color that will be available for the A1's interior. In case you didn't know, Wasabi is a strong flavored Japanese type of horseradish with a characteristic green color.

"We use wasabi paste for meals to improve the flavor – but only in small amounts," Bonkova said [...]

Automakers usually make all sorts of claims about their new products, some of which are - or prove to be- true, and some of which are either false or exaggerated. Audi is no exception to the rule as the company has raised the bar high on its new A1 supermini that's due to have its world premiere at the Geneva Salon this March.

We'll have to wait a few months to see for ourselves what's true or not but for now, and aside from the brand's Head of Quality, Werner Zimmermann, claim that "the A1 will be the first fully-fledged premium automobile in its segment," (how many times have we heard that before?) here's what else Audi had to say about the A1's premium feel and quality:

Audi has released a new video similar to the first promo of the R8 variant intended to build anticipation for UK and German deliveries beginning in just a few weeks. The 1min 23sec promo shows the drop top ready to unleash its furious power, only to be stifled by the frustrations of the urban jungle [...]

Just so you know, Audi will constantly be publishing information and teaser videos/pictures on its A1 mini until the online premiere of the car that's planned for early February. Following the release of a couple of clips and a teaser graffiti back in December, the Germans came out today with a video interview Audi marketing boss, Peter Schwarzenbauer, who talks about the 2011 A1 from a sale perspective.

Among other things, Schwarzenbauer says that the company is currently expecting to sell around 80,000 units of its MINI Cooper and Alfa Romeo MiTo competitor in the car's first full year [...]

The Audi E-Tron test drive by the Los Angeles Times is seen in this video, although it’s unlikely to tell you anything you didn’t already know. We don’t get an idea of what it feels like to actually drive the E-Tron, and the torque figures quoted are likely to be those of the wheels, and not the output shaft, which has created some controversy.

The Audi A1 presentation is a long way off in February, if you consider Christmas, holidays and New Year all in the middle, but the A1 countdown has already started. The new Audi compact car will debut at the 2010 Geneva motor show from March 4 to 14, but it’s while before our curiosity will be satisfied.
